Pelvic Pain Physiotherapy in North Somerset

Specialist women’s health physiotherapy for persistent or recurring pelvic pain

What is pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain refers to pain felt in the lower abdomen, pelvis, vulval or vaginal area, perineum, or deep within the pelvis. Pain may be constant or intermittent and can vary in intensity. For some women, pelvic pain is linked to the menstrual cycle, while for others it may be present more persistently or triggered by specific activities.

Pelvic pain can have more than one contributing factor, and symptoms do not always fit neatly into a single diagnosis.

Conditions commonly linked with pelvic pain

Pelvic pain may be associated with a range of conditions, including:

  • Endometriosis

  • Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea)

  • Pelvic floor muscle tension or overactivity

  • Vulval or vaginal pain conditions

  • Bladder or bowel-related pelvic pain

  • Musculoskeletal issues involving the hips, lower back, or pelvis

Common symptoms associated with pelvic pain

Pelvic pain can present in different ways. You may experience one or more of the following:

  • Pain in the pelvis, lower abdomen, vulval or vaginal area

  • Deep pelvic pain or aching

  • Pain during or after intercourse

  • Pain associated with periods or hormonal changes

  • Bladder-related pain or discomfort

  • Bowel-related pain or discomfort

  • Pain with sitting, standing, walking, or certain movements

  • Lower back, hip, or pelvic discomfort alongside pelvic symptoms

How physiotherapy can help with pelvic pain

Women’s health physiotherapy approaches pelvic pain by considering the pelvic floor, musculoskeletal system, and wider lifestyle factors together. Pelvic pain is rarely caused by one issue alone, and support focuses on identifying and addressing contributing factors.

Physiotherapy support may include:

  • Assessment of pelvic floor muscle tone, control, and coordination

  • Hands-on treatment to address soft tissue tension or sensitivity

  • Mobilisation of joints where stiffness or movement restriction contributes to pain

  • Assessment and treatment of related musculoskeletal issues, such as back or hip pain

  • Movement-based rehabilitation to improve confidence and reduce pain with activity

  • Support with posture, breathing, and movement patterns

  • Guidance around activity modification, pacing, and flare-up management

  • Consideration of lifestyle factors such as stress, sleep, and hormonal influences

Support is always tailored to the individual, based on symptoms, contributing factors, and personal goals.

When to seek support

You may wish to seek support if pelvic pain is affecting your comfort, relationships, daily activities, or quality of life, or if symptoms feel persistent or difficult to manage. Where symptoms suggest that further medical investigation may be appropriate, this can be discussed and onward referral recommended.
