Specialist physiotherapy support for abdominal separation during and after pregnancy

Diastasis recti, also referred to as abdominal divarication, is a separation of the abdominal muscles along the midline of the abdomen. It commonly develops during pregnancy as the abdomen expands and often remains present after birth. For some women, this separation may affect how the abdominal muscles function and support the body during everyday movement.
Symptoms can vary and may include one or more of the following:
A visible gap, doming, or bulging along the midline of the abdomen
Reduced abdominal strength or control
A feeling of weakness or lack of support through the core
Difficulty with movements such as lifting, rolling, or getting up from the floor
Lower back, pelvic, or hip discomfort
Changes in posture or balance
Reduced confidence with exercise or daily activities

Physiotherapy for diastasis recti focuses on improving how the abdominal muscles function, rather than simply reducing the appearance of the separation. Support considers the abdominal muscles alongside the pelvic floor, breathing, posture, and overall movement.
Physiotherapy support may include:
Assessment of abdominal muscle function, control, and coordination
Pelvic floor assessment and rehabilitation where relevant
Hands-on treatment to address soft tissue tension or movement restrictions
Support with breathing patterns and pressure management
Progressive rehabilitation exercises to rebuild core strength and control
Movement-based exercise, which may include Pilates-based rehabilitation
Assessment and treatment of related musculoskeletal issues, such as back or pelvic pain
Guidance on returning to exercise and daily activities with confidence
Support is always tailored to the individual, based on symptoms, contributing factors, and personal goals.
You may wish to seek support if diastasis recti is affecting your confidence, comfort, or ability to manage daily activities or exercise, or if symptoms feel persistent after pregnancy.
