Common joint, muscle and movement-related problems affecting women at different stages of life

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions affect the muscles, joints and movement of the body, and are a common cause of pain, stiffness and reduced mobility.
These problems can develop at different stages of life, particularly during pregnancy, postnatal recovery and menopause, where changes in strength, activity levels and hormones can influence how the body feels and functions.
This page outlines common musculoskeletal conditions and symptoms that may benefit from physiotherapy support.
Musculoskeletal conditions can present in different ways. Below are some of the most common patterns of pain and movement issues that may benefit from assessment and support.
Common back and spine problems affecting daily movement and activity.
Low back pain
Neck and upper back pain
Postural-related pain
Persistent or recurrent back pain
Pain around the hips and pelvis, often affecting walking, standing or lying comfortably.
Pelvic girdle pain (pregnancy/postnatal)
Hip pain or stiffness
Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS)
Pain affecting the shoulder, elbow or wrist, often linked to lifting, repetitive use or changes in activity.
Shoulder pain (including rotator cuff-related pain)
Tennis elbow (lateral elbow pain)
Wrist or thumb pain (e.g. De Quervain’s)
Conditions affecting tendons and soft tissues that may limit movement or tolerance to activity.
Achilles tendinopathy
Plantar fasciitis
Tendon-related pain (hips, shoulders, ankles)
Muscle tightness or strain
Changes in strength, movement and confidence that can affect how your body copes with daily activity.
Reduced muscle strength or endurance
Reduced mobility or flexibility
Loss of confidence with movement
General deconditioning after pregnancy, illness or inactivity
Joint and muscle changes linked to hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause.
Joint pain or stiffness
Reduced muscle mass or strength
Reduced recovery from exercise
Changes in balance or stability
Musculoskeletal symptoms often overlap, and it’s common not to have a clear diagnosis.
You may recognise a specific condition, or you may simply be aware of pain, stiffness or difficulty with movement.
You don’t need to know exactly what the problem is before seeking support — assessment helps identify what’s contributing to your symptoms and what may help.

If you’re experiencing pain, stiffness or movement difficulties, physiotherapy can help you understand what’s happening and what may improve your symptoms.
