Specialist physiotherapy support for pelvic, hip, and lower back pain during and after pregnancy

Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) refers to pain experienced around the pelvis, hips, lower back, or buttocks. It is commonly associated with pregnancy but can also persist after birth or develop in other situations where the joints and muscles of the pelvis are under increased strain.
Pelvic girdle pain can affect one or more areas of the pelvis and may vary in intensity from mild discomfort to more significant pain that impacts daily activities.
Symptoms can vary between individuals and may change throughout the day. You may experience one or more of the following:
Pain in the lower back, hips, buttocks, or pelvis
Pain around the pubic bone or groin
Pain on one side of the pelvis or both sides
Discomfort when walking, climbing stairs, or standing on one leg
Pain when turning over in bed or getting in and out of the car
A feeling of instability or “giving way” around the pelvis
Pain that worsens with prolonged standing, walking, or certain movements

Physiotherapy for pelvic girdle pain focuses on supporting the pelvis as part of the wider musculoskeletal system. Pelvic pain is often influenced by movement patterns, muscle coordination, joint function, and load management.
Physiotherapy support may include:
Assessment of pelvic, hip, and lower back movement and joint function
Hands-on treatment to address soft tissue tension or joint restriction
Treatment of related musculoskeletal issues, such as hip or lower back pain
Guidance on movement strategies to reduce strain during daily activities
Rehabilitation exercises to improve strength, stability, and control
Movement-based exercise, which may include Pilates-based rehabilitation
Advice around pacing, activity modification, and flare-up management
Support with posture, breathing, and movement confidence
Support is always tailored to the individual, based on symptoms, contributing factors, and personal goals.
You may wish to seek support if pelvic girdle pain is affecting your mobility, comfort, sleep, or ability to manage daily activities, or if symptoms feel persistent or limiting.
